নোয়াখালীর জেলার ৫০% মানুষ থাকে বিদেশ বিভুঁইয়ে। কষ্টার্জিত অর্থ দেশে স্বজনের কাছে পাঠানোর মাধ্যমে দেশের জন্য নিয়ে আসে মহামুল্যবান বৈদেশিক মূদ্রা। সেই বৈদেশিক মূদ্রার উপর ভর করে উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প চলে সারা দেশে অথচ এই প্রাচীন জেলা শহরটা দেখতে পায়না কোন উন্নয়নের মুখ। আশির দশক থেকে দীর্ঘ ৫/৬ টি সংসদ নির্বাচনে নোয়াখালীর জেলা শহর মাইজদির (নোয়াখালী-৪) মানুষ বার বার একটি প্রতীককে জয়যুক্ত করে গেছে একটি মাত্র আশায়, বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতির চাকা সচল রাখার ক্ষেত্রে অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এই জেলার খানিকটা উন্নয়ন। যার উত্তরে বারবার পেয়েছে অবহেলা।
